City of Ashes is the second book in the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare. The story continues with Clary Fray trying to make sense of her newly discovered identity as a Shadowhunter while dealing with the reality of her mother's coma and her feelings for Jace. Meanwhile, the Shadowhunter community is rocked by a symbol of the second Mortal Instrument, the Mortal Sword, being destroyed.
