In a post-apocalyptic world where the Great White has destroyed much of civilization, the surviving human society is governed by a strict regime known as the Council and enforced by the Herder Faction. The protagonist, Elspeth Gordie, is an orphan with mental abilities that she must keep hidden, as those who are discovered to be 'Misfits' with such powers are either burned or sent to the remote mountain estate of Obernewtyn. Elspeth's abilities are eventually discovered, and she is sent to Obernewtyn, where she discovers a community of other Misfits. As she learns more about her abilities and the secrets of Obernewtyn, Elspeth becomes embroiled in a plot to overthrow the oppressive Council and Herders. She must navigate the dangers of her new environment, uncover the mysteries of the past, and embrace her destiny as a key player in the struggle for the freedom of Misfits and the future of their world.
