Description

The Lost Staircase is a novel by Elinor Brent-Dyer that tells the story of a young girl named Jacoba 'Jackie' Bettany, who discovers that she is the heir to a dilapidated castle in the Channel Islands. Jackie is the cousin of the characters from Brent-Dyer's popular Chalet School series. After learning about her inheritance, Jackie leaves New Zealand, where she has been living with her mother, to claim her castle. Upon arrival, she finds the castle, known as Bettany's Castle, in a state of disrepair. With the help of new friends and the local community, Jackie takes on the challenge of restoring the castle to its former glory. Throughout the story, she encounters various adventures and mysteries, including the discovery of a lost staircase that leads to hidden rooms and possibly treasure. The novel is a standalone story but is set in the same universe as the Chalet School books, and it combines elements of mystery, adventure, and the classic boarding school genre for which Brent-Dyer is well-known.
