The 'Dark Lord of Derkholm' is a fantasy novel by Diana Wynne Jones that tells the story of a magical world exploited by a ruthless businessman from our world, Mr. Chesney. Every year, this world is forced to organize Pilgrim Parties, where tourists from our world partake in a 'fantasy adventure,' complete with a Dark Lord, a quest, and staged battles. The inhabitants are tired of this destructive tourism, which wreaks havoc on their land and lives. The story follows the wizard Derk and his family as they are unwillingly chosen to fulfill the roles of the Dark Lord and his minions for the year's tours. With the help of his unique children, both human and griffin, and the wizard community, Derk seeks to end Mr. Chesney's exploitation and restore peace and authenticity to their world. The novel is a satirical take on the fantasy genre and explores themes of free will, family, and the impact of commercialism.
